yeah - the only thing I'm considering adding is a Boxee Box to our setup to make accessing TV shows easier although Serviio has some capabilities that have mitigated that concern for now.

We abandoned cable a few years ago and couldn't be more pleased. Rather than pay the ridiculous subscription amount from the cable company, we now use a combination of the antenna (free HD networks) and a Roku box (TV internet app box). Through the Roku we have subscriptions to Hulu ($7.99) and Netflix ($8.99). The kids get all their favorite shows and movies through Netflix and mommy still gets all her taped network shows on Hulu. One drawback of the antenna system is no digital recorder/Tivo. Hulu takes care of that. Long story short, we cut our almost $100 cable bill in less than half by just paying for internet and a few online sibscriptions.

In their book "Made to stick" Dan and Chip Heath refer to unconscious competence as "the curse of knowledge". There' a great example of this in the chapter where they talk about an experiment that involved people tapping out the tune of a well known song. Someone has written about it here:http://blog.isiteasy.com/the-curse-of-knowledge-another-reason-to-usab

I had a similar idea the first time I saw the technology demonstrated. I even wrote a formal project proposal to develop an immersive news tool. Maybe I'll get to build it one day.

Agreed that there's a bigger problem going on that needs to be addressed - I think that kind of change won't happen though until the baby steps I started outlining above start to get sorted though. If people would just be more aware/conscious of the experience big improvements would get made quite easily.

Love that XKCD comic.... was painfully familiar with that situation when I was working in the translation space with Clay Tablet - talk about a standards happy industry.

Weirdly reminding me of this http://xkcd.com/927/.

The fact that this always happens indicates that there's a systemic meta problem happening - that SMEs maybe shouldn't be tasked with solving problems (directly) or having the power to declare a problem solved. Rather, they should be a resource used in the creation of the solution and -- beyond the points you mention above -- the ability to make the declaration of "the problem is solved" actually should involve at the end of the process, umm, the problem being solved -- including no dread feelings.

Thanks Joe - love your point about the personal relationships... Such a key component to getting stuff done in a big organization - not nearly enough time is spent by many to get to know folks outside their respective teams and that small effort would pay huge dividends in the long run.

I loved this post Ryan. The title alone would have sufficed, you coined something lovely in that statement.

The core of my job is to navigate between the worlds of corporate IT teams and the business objectives we'd like to meet with our clients. I really like the shared vision part, the way I approach that is to try and get both the client IT team and our development team to be part of the creative process. By doing that, they also have ownership and are more emotionally invested in making it happen.

I also invest a lot of time in building personal relationships with IT teams. Getting to know them as individuals and learning about their passions. That has helped me tremendously in getting through perceived constraints.

Great post, thank you bro.
