Actually more than a couple of companies have taken a stab at this. SDL had a service for this at some point and I know of another company that’s working on this type of solution.

The challenge of course is the quality of machine translation – it’s still not quite to the point where an untrained system could provide good enough quality that you could be sure your message wouldn’t get corrupted in the translation process.

Certainly I could see the benefit of writing an email in my mother tongue, and then clicking to translate into a foreign language of my choice.
